πŸ“¦ Visual & Spatial Reasoning

Day 2 | ⏱️ Part of 3-Hour Reasoning Block | TCS Interview Prep

πŸ“Œ Subtopics

  • Cube Folding: Identifying which 2D net folds into a given cube
  • Paper Cutting & Folding: Predicting the pattern after unfolding cut paper
  • Visual Reasoning: Identifying the next figure in a sequence, mirror images, water images
  • Pattern completion

πŸ“– Comprehensive Notes

1. Cube Folding (Dice Problems)

Cube folding involves predicting what 3D cube is formed from a 2D sheet (net), or vice-versa.

  • Opposite Faces Principle: In any net of a cube, faces that are alternate (separated by one face in a straight row/column) are opposite to each other.
  • Important Rule: Opposite faces can never be adjacent. Therefore, in any view of a 3D cube, you can never see both opposite faces at the same time. If a 3D option shows two opposite faces, eliminate it.
Standard T-Net:
     [1]
  [2][3][4]
     [5]
     [6]
  * Opposite pairs: 1 & 5, 2 & 4, 3 & 6.

2. Paper Cutting & Folding

This section tests your ability to visualize the spatial result of folded and cut paper.

  • Unfolding Rules:
    1. Unfolding is the exact reverse of folding.
    2. Treat each fold line as a mirror. When you unfold across a line, reflect all existing cuts/shapes across that line.
    3. Keep track of the layers: Each fold doubles the thickness. 1 fold β†’\rightarrow 2 layers, 2 folds β†’\rightarrow 4 layers. A single cut through 44 layers will yield 44 identical cuts in the unfolded sheet.

3. Visual Reasoning & Sequences

  • Figure Series/Sequence: Identify the next figure by analyzing changes in elements:
    • Rotations: Track symbols rotating clockwise (CW) or counter-clockwise (CCW) by 45∘,90∘,45^\circ, 90^\circ, or 180∘180^\circ.
    • Movement: Look for items shifting positions (e.g., center β†’\rightarrow corner β†’\rightarrow side).
    • Addition/Deletion: Count of lines or dots increasing or decreasing (e.g., 3β†’4β†’53 \rightarrow 4 \rightarrow 5 sided polygon).
  • Mirror and Water Images:
    • Mirror Image (Vertical Mirror): Left and Right swap places. Top and Bottom remain the same.
    • Water Image (Horizontal Mirror at Bottom): Top and Bottom swap places. Left and Right remain the same.

Example: Find the water image of the word REASONING\text{REASONING}. Flip every letter vertically (top to bottom) but keep their left-to-right order:

  • Rβ†’α΄šR \rightarrow \text{ᴚ} (water image of R is vertically flipped R).
  • REASONINGβ†’α΄šEβˆ€SONIND\text{REASONING} \rightarrow \text{ᴚEβˆ€SONIND} (conceptually flipped upside down).

4. Pattern Completion

  • A 2D figure has a missing quadrant (usually the bottom-right).
  • Analyze the symmetry of the remaining three quadrants (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal symmetry) to identify the correct missing piece.

πŸ“ Key Tips

Cube Folding:
- Opposite faces never share an edge in the net
- Mark one face and trace adjacent faces

Paper Cutting:
- Track fold direction (horizontal/vertical/diagonal)
- Mirror the cuts along fold lines when unfolding
- Number of layers doubles with each fold

Mirror Image: Left-right reversed, top-bottom same
Water Image: Top-bottom reversed, left-right same
